Concertina Book

 Title: Memoranda of Important Matters
Artist: Julie Shaw Lutts
Type: Handmade Book

The way this concertina book is handmade is what makes this book a bit more personal, especially how the book is covered by hard cover which makes it look like a box which protects the concertina inside.

On the outside it looks like a box with a little window to look inside, the cover also seems to have writing all over the front which also add a personal touch to it. When looking inside you will notice three little statues stuck inside the cover, in my opinion it looks as if they are like soldiers protecting the book inside.

I think the main thing that draw my attention to the book, was how it came across as a more personal diary, mainly because of how it looked like a secret was hiding inside.

Light Video

Title: Rippled
Author: Oh Yeah Wow
Time Lenght: 03:57

The Film starts off with a creature crawling out of water, it's eyes bright and vibrate lighting up it's path as it continue moving.

Then as the creature continues it's journey everything suddenly start to light up, showing different colours and shapes from the movement of the lights. Every once and a while there are scenes of the creature disappearing as it jumps through the ground or walls. As the film ends the creature is seen jumping over objects before diving back into the water where the creature came back from.

I think the one thing I found interesting about this film was the shapes the light formed and how the creature is formed just by using coloured lights and how people managed to make objects move when the creature touch it.

Artist book

Artist: Frida Kahlo
Type: Visual Diary

Frida Kahlo  paintings and drawings in her diary shows a story in her life, which I think her theme in her Visual Diary is about, as she also writes her ideas next to her paintings. With this Page in her diary it looks as if she had ink or paint spill on it, which makes her diary more personal.

I think the way she continued her painting over the stain add effect to her work and how she has little scribbles of yellow and blues behind writing, which is most probably from other artistic ideas she drew on the other pages.

Colour Artist

Title: The Water-Lily Pond
Artist: Claude Monet
Year: 1899
Media: Oil on Canvas
Size: 88.3x93.1 cm

Monet explores the theme colour in this art piece by using different tones of green through out most of the painting, there are little use of whites and reds which helps bring out the flowers on the water. Monet use of greens making the painting more natural.

I find Monet painting fascinating mainly because of how he painted everything in detail, especially with the reflection of the water and how the bridge is lightly dimmed which shows us a shadow is cast upon it, since one part of the bridge is lighter than other.

Machine Video

Title: Sewing Machine Orchestra
Author: Martin Messier
Time Length: 02:32

This Video Starts off with a man walking up to the sewing machines who seems to be the conductor of the machines, while a few of the machines are working but with a bit of a twist, they play music.

Each scene shows a different sewing machine, at a different angle at a different speed making a different sounds which some how makes music. I was fascinated by this video mainly because it involves music, but when I watched it I noticed all the sewing machines are all the same which was quite interesting since there were so many not to mention they were set up a certain way so they each had a different sound which then formed a song.

Journey Video

Title: Endless Roads Part 1
Author: Juan Rayos
Time Length: 10:08

This film started off with 7 girls, a van, a 15 day road trip around Spain. The film is mainly a document of the road trip portraying the girls, showing each girl's lifestyle and their passion for long boarding.

Even though this is only the first part of the four films of this documentary it is quite interesting, especially through the the road trips showing different views as they travel, along the way they stop and the girls start long boarding down the roads before continuing their journey through Spain. When they arrive to Almería they are seen skating through the streets on Long boards each one doing tricks and stunts on them, at the end of the day they are all seen skating down a road three of them holding each others hands as the skate down the slope.

During the film The camera is shown at different angles when a girl skates by or is doing trick, I assume there are two cameras being used because one scene would show a girl skating down the road and another scene will show her skating towards the camera, by doing this it helps showing us a full view of the girl and what she does next whether it's a stunt or skating off the road.

Repetition Artist

Artist: Andy Warhol
Title: Campbell's Soup Cans
Year: 1962
Size: 20x16
Media: Synthetic Polymer Paint on Canvas

Andy Warhol's repetition of Campbell's soup cans show us how identical each soup can is, same colours, shape and size. That is until you have a closer look and realised they are actually different each soup can is, if you look at them closely you will notice each can has different soup names.

In Warhol's work I am quite fascinated this piece mainly because they all look the same but they really aren't, I mean they are all the same size, colours and shape but if you look properly you will notice that not only do they have completely different names but there is one soup that has a yellow ribbon around the gold stamp.

Traffic Artist

Artist: Jian Wu
Title: Midday Traffic
Size: 16x20
Media: Oil on Canvas

Jian Wu painting shows Traffic in New York city and how congested it really is, his use of colours is what makes the art piece very interesting, also how he distorted the ground to make it seem as if it was water reflecting all the bright colours off the ground. He also explores the theme traffic by painting the all the cars that are very congested in New York.

I like how vibrate the colours are and how the yellows and reds really stand out of this painting, and how there is one person who is standing alone sticks out on the road, but she also slightly blends in with the car she is in front of, as if she is part of the traffic as well.

Fran Alison

1,  Joker brooch,  Oxidised silver, miniature card, bottle caps
2,  Club brooch, Oxidised silver, miniature card
3,  Diamond brooch, Oxidised silver, miniature card, found jewellery

With Fran Alison's work she finds materials whether it being toys, bottle caps or anything she finds on the street, she can somehow always make it into a beautiful piece of jewellery, see in the 3rd brooch, she uses a ordinary playing card which has what seems to be black card that is stuck behind the card, then using a old piece of jewellery she stuck it right on top of the diamond of the playing card.

Because of this design of her brooch, it has given me an idea to create jewellery out of playing cards, but I would like to make them a bit more crazier by ripping them and mismatching them together, but i might even copy the idea of adding jewellery to cards to make them stand out a bit.

New Zealand Jeweller

Roy Mason

Name: Celtic Ring and Kiwi- No 57
Material: Pink Gold

With Roy Masons Jewellery it is very easy to tell with his work that they are New Zealand origin mainly because of his designs on them. As you can see with the jewellery on the left he has Maori designs engraved all around the ring.

But his work doesn't necessary show it is from New Zealand because of his use of Moari designs but also his use of materials, the ring down below shows a different aspect of New Zealand.

Jewellery with a Symbol

Artist: Gina Machitt
Title: Paua Smash Nike
Date: 2001
Size: 98(Height)x39(Length)x8(Width)
Materials: Paua Shell, Silver, Fine Silver, Stainless Steel, Resin.

I found this piece very intriguing because you can tell it's the Nike Symbol but what really took my interest was how Machitt used Paua Shells inside the tick. I also liked how Nike is a American brand but Machitt added the Paua which kinda gives a New Zealand edge to the design.

Cultural Jewellery

Date: First half of 2nd century B.C.
Artist: Unknown
Materials: Gold Country: Greece
Title: Bracelet showing Snakes

In Ancient Greek jewellery commonly consisted of gold beads shaped like shells, and flowers. Bracelets were mainly used on both hands over either elbow or around the wrist, the appearance of the bracelet may seem simple at first, made from solid materials which then forms a spiral or open with or without decorations.

In mythology the snake stands for fertility or creation of birth. For both Greek and Egyptian mythology, the snake represented eternity. Ouroboros, the Greek symbol for eternity, which consisted a snake curled in a circle or hoop, biting it's own tail, it is also believe that snakes would eat themselves and are reborn from the endless cycle of both destruction and creation.

Art Nouveau

Artist:Rene Lalique
Title: Pendant with leaves and poppies
Year: unknown
Media: Blue enamel, yellow-green enamel, white enamble, grey- lavender pearl, gold

Originated from France.French jeweler glass maker Rene Lalique, inspired by Japanese art, Lailque was then able to express nature in jewellery to show his different aspects of nature in his works.

Many jewellers were keen to create this style in tradition, with it's works of sculpted and enameled gold, and also with the acceptance of jewellers as artists, In many of enameled work of period, precious stones receded such as Diamonds, which were usually used with less familiar materials such as molded glass, horn or ivory.

Johannes Vermeer

Title: Girl with the pearl earring
Year: 1665
Media: Oil Paint on Canvas
Where: Holland during the Baroque Period

Painted by Dutch artist, Jan Vermeer. Girl with the pearl earring is one of the most recognised art pieces. The painting is also been call 'The Dutch Mona Lisa' or 'The Mona Lisa of the North'.

A strength in this painting is the use of light, which highlights of the pearl as well as the girls face. The background is very plain, it is different compared to his other art pieces which usually has a busy background, but because of this it shows that Vermeer's main focus of the painting is the girl and her pearl earring.

Title: Girl With Red Hat
Artist: Johannes Vermeer
Year: 1666

See in this painting the background is very busy, but it still shows us main focus of the other painting but with a bit more life into the painting by adding colour and detail to the background.

Sensing the Surface Blog 3

In week 4 we started with our portrait paintings. Using oil paint I found it very difficult finding the right skin tone mainly because of how pale my models skin tone is, it was especially hard since there was very little amount of white paint at one time, also painting her lips was a bit of a mission as well since I had trouble making her lips look right, but other than that my painting turned out okay...

This is the photograph of my model.

I also found out using turpentine not only helped clean the oil paint off the brush but it also helps smearing the paint on to the canvas board.

Next time i will start on the models face instead of the hair, as i struggled placing the paint on the face because the hair would smudged into the face once I started painting the face.

We were then shown a power point of self portrait artists and chose 2 artists whose work attracted our attention to their work.

Peter Stitchbury

I was attracted to this painting because of how Stitchbury painted the portrait how there isn't any shadows on the face and how he has also enlarged the eyes of the girl which stands out the most out of the face.

Stephen Allwood

I found this art piece fascinating because of the colours, also because of how it is painted because it looks a bit more like a photograph than a painting. I also found myself attracted to this painting because of the reflection off the glasses where I realised he was quite detailed with reflection.

Sensing the Surface blog 2

In week 3 we were learning about New Zealand Painting and 'Painting After', which is when an artist paint in a similar style as another artist it's also a response to the artist they are looking at.

After Painting

The artist i decided to do a painting after was Dick Frizzel, because I found this art piece engaging, I then decided to change the colour as well as the message but leaving the word life exactly the same as the original piece.

This is the original art piece.

And here is my Painting after art piece, you can already see the difference between both pieces. You can already see the difference between both works, the original main colours are black and white where my piece is of different tones of purples and blues as well as white.

Manipulating The Image Weeks 5,6 & 7

These past 3 weeks we learnt how to screen print posters based on the theme Grounded which is about nature, to show at the Grounded festival on the 27th to the 29th June.

In week 5 we learnt how to make a image for screen printing on photoshop 6, by using photoshop 4 first because it is the only version with a 'half tone screen'. But I decided to not to use photoshop but instead draw my design on an A4 piece of paper then using the printer I scanned my design enlarging it to A3.

Week 6 we learnt how to make our prints, i realised it is very process driven.
  1. Coating- A light sensitive a photographic emulsion is applied
  2. Exposing- UV light exposes your image stencil onto your screen
  3. Printing- You print your images
  4. Cleaning- The photographic stencil is removed to start again.

In week 7 we learnt about different types of paper which is made differently, whether its the weight/thickness or what the paper is made of.
We were then given 4 different types of paper for our prints.
  • Thin Cartridge
  • Brown Paper
  • Wet Strength Paper
  • Canvas Embosed Cartridge

While printing I used one of my friends print design as well as using my own.
This is her design:

After doing so many prints I realised I did a few mess ups, mainly because I was spreading the ink over the screen too hard which is why the print didn't come out clearly. But after my prints I decided to collage my butterfly designs on my posters to create a pop up effect to my art piece. Here are my final pieces.

In this piece I used the sunflower design Emily made and Collaged the butterflies around it, then used baking paper I decided to use it for the words Get Grounded as the paper is see-through so you can still see the print under the print design.

This Design my most favourite because the pink and blue go together perfectly, I was kinda experimenting with the brown paper butterfly print over the blue print and to my surprise it worked really well then using a black vivid i wrote the words Get grounded around the butterflies.

Manipulating The Image Week 4

On Monday and Tuesday in Week 4 we were making magazine covers, we had to pick out a theme to our magazine... the theme i chose was music.... i think. Doing 2 covers these were both the original and the final piece.

To make this cover i crop the picture till i got the picture of the girl, the adding a large red writing to the title i then made the letter R a little bit larger the the rest of the font.
Then for all the little blurbs i used either red or white for the writing. I then decided to shape one of the blurbs to curve in with the hair.

With this cover I cropped the image then change the contrast, The doing the same thing with title font as the other cover, but instead of using white for the blurbs i decided to stick with red.

The main thing i would like to do next time with these covers were to add a barcode to the cover.

Manipulating The Image Week 3

On Monday we learnt about Adjectives for our blogs as we seem to lack in describing our art works. We were then told about trendlist.org looking at graphic posters and how they are designed. Then choosing two posters we had to describe the piece.

Artist: Falko Ohlmer
Year: 2008
Composition: The larger writing seem to be mainly on the left side of the cover where the smaller writing is on the left side near the center and the colour is full white for this writing. The larger writing seems to fade more into the cover making it a bit harder to read it.

Artist: Erica Bech
Year: 2012
Composition: The writing is pretty bold and stand out from the background, The background seems to be split in half by two different colours.

On Tuesday we then design our own graphic posters, I first planned on making a poster with lyrics from my favourite artist as the background then have a treble clef over the top of the words. But i then decided against it and painted a treble clef then using baking paper i wrote my message: 'Music Is The Voice Of The Soul'. I mainly did this because I am very passionate about music as well as art.

When I scanned the original the printing seem to change the colour of it making the colours completely opposite then the original poster.

manipulating the Image Week 2

On Monday and Tuesday we all did monoprints for posters, on Monday we did a practise run with printing, because it has been awhile since we last did it.

On Tuesday Emma gave the class a task to make a A3 poster that contained at least 3 of the 5 medias used, whether it was text, image, monoprint, collage, drawing or painting.
The Three medias I used text, monoprint and drawing, the poster also had to have a simple directive to it as well. My directive was Pump It LOUDER!
Using collage for the word pump and felt tips for the word it....
Then for the word Louder i monoprinted the word and used black colouring pencil spikes to make the word stick out.

Sensing the Surface blog 1

Week One

On Wednesday and Thursday was our first time having a new teacher/tutor, Frances. We first saw a power point of 20th century artists, then choosing one artist and there work for our forgery assignment the next week. Then Selecting 2 artist we had to do a study on them, the artists who i was interested in were Andy Warhol and Jackson pollack.

Artist: Andy Warhol
Title: Marylin
Style: Pop Art
Year: 1962

I found this painting interesting because not only was it of Marylin Monroe but also the colour which is used in Warhol's works. In my opinion i think the artist used Monroe as his subject in this painting to tell a story of her life.

Week Two

In week two we all had to select a painting of the artist we did for our study the week for our forgery assignment this week.  I decided to choose a painting from Andy Warhol, His coke bottle painting/print.

Doing this painting i found it a bit difficult because of the of how the lines are so close to each other and also how they shaped differently.

Here is my almost finished design compare to the original.

Then for part of Thursday we learnt how to stretch our own canvas which we will be using next week for our self portrait assignment. We also had to take a photograph of our partner for next week as we will be using that photo for our painting.

Manipulating The Image Week 1

On Monday we started off doing a study of what a poster is and what it is used for, we then started to work with text.

This one of my positive and negative design. This would have to be my favourite.

On Tuesday made our own posters making our own text out of magazine clippings. Here are my final art pieces.

I like both posters but by far this one would have to be my favourite, mainly because of the quote.

Drawing Success Week 7

This week i pretty much did nothing but do more of my drawing project, so far i have now done 4 out of my 6 drawings.

Flowers in Charcoal on White paper.

White Rose In white pencil on black paper.

Rose in charcoal on white paper. I decided to use black ink on the rose to try and blend the charcoal with it into the paper.

Using charcoal for the rose i then decided to splatter red dye onto the page, at first I tried to do it so it look like the red was dripping from the rose, but I accidentally got more red over the page then on the rose. I then realised that the rose was too light against the red, using a charcoal pencil I darkened the rose, showing tone and depth to it.

My other two drawings will be white pencil on black paper.
