Concertina Book

 Title: Memoranda of Important Matters
Artist: Julie Shaw Lutts
Type: Handmade Book

The way this concertina book is handmade is what makes this book a bit more personal, especially how the book is covered by hard cover which makes it look like a box which protects the concertina inside.

On the outside it looks like a box with a little window to look inside, the cover also seems to have writing all over the front which also add a personal touch to it. When looking inside you will notice three little statues stuck inside the cover, in my opinion it looks as if they are like soldiers protecting the book inside.

I think the main thing that draw my attention to the book, was how it came across as a more personal diary, mainly because of how it looked like a secret was hiding inside.

Light Video

Title: Rippled
Author: Oh Yeah Wow
Time Lenght: 03:57

The Film starts off with a creature crawling out of water, it's eyes bright and vibrate lighting up it's path as it continue moving.

Then as the creature continues it's journey everything suddenly start to light up, showing different colours and shapes from the movement of the lights. Every once and a while there are scenes of the creature disappearing as it jumps through the ground or walls. As the film ends the creature is seen jumping over objects before diving back into the water where the creature came back from.

I think the one thing I found interesting about this film was the shapes the light formed and how the creature is formed just by using coloured lights and how people managed to make objects move when the creature touch it.

Artist book

Artist: Frida Kahlo
Type: Visual Diary

Frida Kahlo  paintings and drawings in her diary shows a story in her life, which I think her theme in her Visual Diary is about, as she also writes her ideas next to her paintings. With this Page in her diary it looks as if she had ink or paint spill on it, which makes her diary more personal.

I think the way she continued her painting over the stain add effect to her work and how she has little scribbles of yellow and blues behind writing, which is most probably from other artistic ideas she drew on the other pages.

Colour Artist

Title: The Water-Lily Pond
Artist: Claude Monet
Year: 1899
Media: Oil on Canvas
Size: 88.3x93.1 cm

Monet explores the theme colour in this art piece by using different tones of green through out most of the painting, there are little use of whites and reds which helps bring out the flowers on the water. Monet use of greens making the painting more natural.

I find Monet painting fascinating mainly because of how he painted everything in detail, especially with the reflection of the water and how the bridge is lightly dimmed which shows us a shadow is cast upon it, since one part of the bridge is lighter than other.

Machine Video

Title: Sewing Machine Orchestra
Author: Martin Messier
Time Length: 02:32

This Video Starts off with a man walking up to the sewing machines who seems to be the conductor of the machines, while a few of the machines are working but with a bit of a twist, they play music.

Each scene shows a different sewing machine, at a different angle at a different speed making a different sounds which some how makes music. I was fascinated by this video mainly because it involves music, but when I watched it I noticed all the sewing machines are all the same which was quite interesting since there were so many not to mention they were set up a certain way so they each had a different sound which then formed a song.

Journey Video

Title: Endless Roads Part 1
Author: Juan Rayos
Time Length: 10:08

This film started off with 7 girls, a van, a 15 day road trip around Spain. The film is mainly a document of the road trip portraying the girls, showing each girl's lifestyle and their passion for long boarding.

Even though this is only the first part of the four films of this documentary it is quite interesting, especially through the the road trips showing different views as they travel, along the way they stop and the girls start long boarding down the roads before continuing their journey through Spain. When they arrive to Almería they are seen skating through the streets on Long boards each one doing tricks and stunts on them, at the end of the day they are all seen skating down a road three of them holding each others hands as the skate down the slope.

During the film The camera is shown at different angles when a girl skates by or is doing trick, I assume there are two cameras being used because one scene would show a girl skating down the road and another scene will show her skating towards the camera, by doing this it helps showing us a full view of the girl and what she does next whether it's a stunt or skating off the road.

Repetition Artist

Artist: Andy Warhol
Title: Campbell's Soup Cans
Year: 1962
Size: 20x16
Media: Synthetic Polymer Paint on Canvas

Andy Warhol's repetition of Campbell's soup cans show us how identical each soup can is, same colours, shape and size. That is until you have a closer look and realised they are actually different each soup can is, if you look at them closely you will notice each can has different soup names.

In Warhol's work I am quite fascinated this piece mainly because they all look the same but they really aren't, I mean they are all the same size, colours and shape but if you look properly you will notice that not only do they have completely different names but there is one soup that has a yellow ribbon around the gold stamp.

Traffic Artist

Artist: Jian Wu
Title: Midday Traffic
Size: 16x20
Media: Oil on Canvas

Jian Wu painting shows Traffic in New York city and how congested it really is, his use of colours is what makes the art piece very interesting, also how he distorted the ground to make it seem as if it was water reflecting all the bright colours off the ground. He also explores the theme traffic by painting the all the cars that are very congested in New York.

I like how vibrate the colours are and how the yellows and reds really stand out of this painting, and how there is one person who is standing alone sticks out on the road, but she also slightly blends in with the car she is in front of, as if she is part of the traffic as well.
